Prestigious if Product Design Award for ALVA 544 Satellite
22
March 2000 – During last month's CBIT in Hannover (Germany) the ALVA 544
Satellite braille display was presented as one of the winners of the prestigious
iF Product Design Award.
Industrie Forum Design Hannover, or iF for short, is internationally renowned
as one of the leading design institutions in the field of contemporary
industrial design. Based at the world's largest exhibition site in Hannover, iF
is dedicated to the task of promoting excellence in industrial design and making
industrial management more aware of the importance of design as a contributory
factor in the commercial success of a product.
From the Official iF Product Design Award Catalogue
The ALVA 544 Satellite braille display enables visually-impaired users to
work in a Windows instead of a DOS environment. The front keys are deliberately
large for thumb operation. Contour and structure of keys makes them easier to
use as well. Moreover, there is a difference between keys used frequently and
those used less frequently. The flat shape and only minor heat generation - the
device is located under the keyboard - are product of a specially developed,
internally integrated power supply. Injection molding enhances the design, while
allowing compactness. The new choice of materials (a mix of PVC and ABS) is very
durable and more environmentally friendly than materials previously preferred.
Jury statement: "Very well designed in terms of the user group and their
impairment."
